Consistency and experience are two key attributes the Reds boss wants to instil in his team in the long-term, but the youthful influence in the side has produced speed and movement to United’s attacks, another pleasing development.

“The players are improving all the time,” Sir Alex says. “The one thing we can’t give them is experience, we can’t give them old heads – only playing gives them that. But the signs are good.

“We’re pleased with the speed and movement in the team. Look at Ji-sung Park, in his first season with us, we have to say he has been absolutely fantastic for us.

“He adds something different to the way we play. His attacking movement and commitment to finding space has been terrific.

“What that lad needs is to score a couple of goals in a row, maybe two in one match, because he gets into some great positions. He has been a bit unlucky with his finishing. He will finish.
